A submission in an open international competition for a range of convention halls and auditoria on a site at the centre of the city of Nara, Japan. In this proposal, the facilities are laid out as individual rooms over the whole of the site and surrounded by a continuous foyer space which extends to the back of the pavement on all sides. The generosity of the foyer space is proposed to encourage a public ownership of the interior where both planned and spontaneous events might happen. The building would contain a mixture of the big and the small, the determined and the undetermined, the organised and the chaotic.
