The existing barn is one amongst a group of farm buildings at the head of a quiet valley and remote from the village.

The clients, a young family, wanted a simple transformation of the shell of the building so that they could live there and change the interior and the surrounding gardens and fields over time. The character of the barn is retained by limiting changes made to the exterior to bold manifestations. A few new openings are made in the stone walls, large and without dressed stone reveals. An industrial roofing of blue corrugated cement is laid over the existing oak roof structure. On the interior a new first floor is constructed, as if it were a large table standing between the lime-washed stone walls.
