Nara Convention Hall
Nara, Japan 1992
Client: City of Nara Open competition, special award
A submission in an open international competition for a range of convention halls and auditoria on a site at the centre of Nara, Japan.
In the proposal, facilities are laid out over the whole site as individual rooms, surrounded by a continuous foyer space which extends out to the pavement on all sides. The generosity of the foyer encourages a sense of public ownership of the interior, where both planned and spontaneous events might happen. The building would contain a mixture of the big and the small, the determined and the undetermined, the organised and the chaotic.
