Within the College’s developing sustainability strategy, the project seeks to minimise embodied energy and energy use in operation. The proposed structure uses cross-laminated (CLT) and laminated veneer (LVL) panels for floors and structural walls, providing a robust yet low-carbon framework. The façades are to be built with large, self-supporting blocks of locally sourced stone. The second-floor pediment will be finished in hardwood cladding stained with a breathable, UV-protected wood stain, ensuring durability and stability. Drawing from traditional construction techniques while integrating modern high-performance membranes and coatings, the building aims for longevity, adaptability, and environmental responsibility. The scheme received planning permission in 2021 but has not yet been realised.
