Butterfield Student Centre, Downing College
Cambridge, United Kingdom 2021–
Client: University of Cambridge, Downing College
The proposed new Student Centre at Downing College is located on the outer range of Downing’s campus, close to the College entrance on Regent Street. Responding to William Wilkins’ East and West ranges, the design adopts a contemporary version of his neo-Greek architecture, using proportions and a reduced tectonic expression rather than decorative embellishment. The building creates flexible spaces for group working, religious functions, events, social life and clubs, with generous, well lit interiors achieved through carefully proportioned window openings.
