Caruso St John Architects' project for the Bremer Landesbank headquarters in Bremen has won the Grand Prix at the 2017 Fritz-Höger Prize for Brick Architecture.

Designs by the 10 shortlisted teams in the contest to design a £40 million national Holocaust memorial next to the Palace of Westminster have gone on public display. Caruso St John, Marcus Taylor and Rachel Whiteread’s proposal consists of two parts – a cast, translucent sculpture above ground and a series of large chambers below ground.

The scheme comprises a new 18,500 capacity football arena, a residential building with 173 cooperative apartments, and two mixed-use high-rise buildings. The project is being developed by HRS Real Estate SG and Credit Suisse.

Caruso St John have won the competition for a new 13,500sq m office building in central Hamburg. The site on Grosser Burstah, adjacent to the Nikolaifleet canal, is part of a master-plan to restructure the area to the north of St Nicholas’s Church in order to re-establish a scale of city blocks more consistent with the older streets in the quarter.

The project includes a new spiral staircase in the rotunda, public spaces on the lower level, and new facilities for Tate members on the upper level. The first phase of the project, focusing on the restoration of galleries in the South East Quadrant, opened in May 2013.

St Gallen Cathedral Chancel

St Gallen, Switzerland

The consecration of the new chancel at St Gallen Cathedral, designed by Caruso St John Architects, was celebrated in a service led by Bishop of St Gallen Markus Büchel and attended by 1200 members of the diocese. In his sermon the Bishop refered to the design as a "couragous and successful work". Construction of the new chancel was completed in four months, during which time the Cathedral remained open to the public.
