Client: Becken Development GmbH Competition, first and second prize
Caruso St John Architects won this commission for new housing in the north of Hamburg in an invited competition organised by Becken Development and the city. The competition was structured in two parts: firstly, the remodelling of an existing office building, and secondly, the densification of the site with new residential development. Caruso St John Architects was awarded first prize for the new housing building and second prize for the refurbishment of the existing structure.
The existing 1970s office building occupies a privileged location on the edge of the Stadtpark and is a distinctive example of post-war modern architecture. The ensemble is complemented by a new residential tower on the northern edge of the site. This slender, vertical volume sits naturally within the park-like setting of the City Nord and contributes much-needed housing as part of Hamburg’s strategy for urban densification. The combination of office use, new housing, and generous public open space supports the ambition to transform City Nord into a diverse and vibrant urban landscape in which working, living, and leisure are closely and thoughtfully interwoven.
