Reaper: Richard Hamilton and Sigfried Giedion
ETH Zurich Zurich, Switserland 2017
Client: ETH Zurich
Reaper. Richard Hamilton and Sigfried Giedion is based on a conceptual encounter between English Pop artist Richard Hamilton (1922–2011) and Swiss architectural historian and critic Sigfried Giedion (1888–1968), author of the influential 1941 book Space, Time, and Architecture and the later study Mechanization Takes Command (1948).
In 1949, Hamilton—then a member of the London-based Independent Group—produced the Reaper print series in response to Giedion’s analysis of the mechanization of everyday life. The exhibition presented Hamilton’s Reaper series alongside selected illustrations created and collected by Giedion for his publications, as well as related visual material.
The exhibition was held at the Graphische Sammlung ETH Zürich from May 3 to June 25, 2017 and was a collaboration between Graphische Sammlung ETH Zürich, gta exhibitions, and gta archive.
