Urban Villa, Mühlebachstrasse
Zurich, Switzerland 2023–present
Client: Ledermann Management AG Competition, first prize
The project is located in Zurich's Seefeld district, a quiet residential part of Zurich in close proximity to the lake where the city’s dense urban texture begins to soften into leafy streets and gardens. The existing corner building still carries traces of a more distinguished past and reveals that it was once conceived as an urban villa. A low wall with an iron fence separates the pavement from the small garden, a familiar Zurich typology of the villa with garden.
Our proposal evolves from this typology. It grows in volume and height, and recalls the character of the original while introducing a contemporary interpretation. Drawing on a historical photograph, Caruso St John developed a concept grounded in the building’s original character.
The new building will be built in the spirit of the original, with rendered masonry walls on the ground floors, timber windows and shutters, parquet flooring, and natural and artificial stone in the staircases and bathrooms. Like the historic building, the new building is constructed in timber. Natural materials define a calm, classical atmosphere designed to last for generations, gaining in richness and beauty over time.
The garden façade opens a contrasting world. It is a modern, light structure with few solid walls, conceived as a kind of open loggia merging with the greenery beyond. Slender supports, balustrades, sliding timber shutters and glazed panels work together to form a delicate rhythm. Internally, full-height curtains are a soft layer of enclosure, creating a domestic character inside.
