AXA Office Building, Binnenalster

Hamburg, Germany 2024

Client: AXA Investment Managers Competition, second and third prize

The redevelopment of the building complex at Hamburg’s Binnenalster focuses on key issues affecting the city center’s vitality. Hamburg’s urban landscape combines 18th- and 19th-century street patterns with modernist buildings from the 1960s and 70s. These modernist offices provide the larger, flexible spaces that contemporary tenants demand, but they now require extensive renovation. The project seeks to maintain the city center’s appeal for both work and living while responding to climate challenges. Its design is guided by four main principles: enhancing the quality and usability of urban spaces within the complex, dividing the ensemble into distinct building volumes, and improving the open areas between them to create a more inviting and functional environment.
